Jenn-Workout Mon 6/15

Written by Jenn on June 15th, 2009

Officially half way through the month.  Yay! I’ve actually stuck with it!

Did today’s workout. It’s official, although I rock at virtual batting, I suck at virtual catch.  My timing is sooo off!

As I said last time, I have a few items of clothing that are fitting me a bit better.  I have my TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) meeting tonight-so we’ll see at the weigh in if I actual lost any weight at all.  I really wish I had measure myself with a tape measure before I started all this. Hopefully I’ve been building muscle, and as we all know muscle is denser than fat.  So I may not have lost any weight at all, but I actually might be smaller.

I’ll post tonight after the meeting at 6:30 EST but before my radio show at 8:30 EST (shameless plug-tonight’s topic is Frugal Father’s Day). Stay tuned.

Oh-and we realize the comments are still busted. Hopefull that will be fixed soon.  Why not subscribe to this blog, then you’ll get all the posts and be updated when we have that fixed! I can’t wait to hear from some of you out there! Meantime feel free to email me at JennFowler@sheislosingit.com.

Jenn-Saturday Update

Written by Jenn on June 13th, 2009

Despite my lack of posts for the last few days, i have indeed been continuing my workouts. Since I have been ignoring their advice to take a “rest” day every 2 days, I am a tad ahead of schedule. Although I started on June 1st, according to the EA Sports Active program I am now officially 1/2 way through my challenge.

I decided increase my workouts today in two ways.

#1-I changed the workout intensity level from moderate to hard. This increased length of the workout by about 8 minutes-mostly by increasing the number of reps on the exercises.

#2-I used a different exercise band. About a year and a half ago I had to go to physical therapy for a really bad ankle sprain (when folks say it can be more painful than a break-let me tell you, they aren’t lying). Long story short, they gave me a couple of different exercise bands. I started using the green one today instead of the red one that comes in the game. This increased the resistance on all the arm exercises-so it was like I had added “weight” to my bicep curls etc

I have been noticing some results. The first is that I feel more energetic. That’s not to say I haven’t had a few dead tired days (most noticeably after my week of travel) but overall I just have more juice. They always say exercise gives you more energy-but when you are out of shape and lacking energy, it just doesn’t seem like you can muster the effort to get going. Trust me-it is true!

On another note, a few more pairs of shorts now fit me. I was so disgusted and discouraged last month when I pulled out my summer clothes-not a single pair of my shorts fit. Those were already my “fat” shorts; last summer I had already felt chubby. So knowing that those didn’t even fit me any more, well, I must admit I actually cried. Sat down and cried. So the fact that I am fitting back into some is very encouraging.

Jenn-Evening Workout

Written by Jenn on June 11th, 2009

This is the first time I’ve left my workout until the evening. Honestly, 11 years in the Army really did give me a very strong psychological association between mornings and working out :) Then there is that link between precipitation and training exercises (aka “if it ain’t raining, we ain’t training”) but that is an entirely different ball of wax

When I work out in the morning I am full of energy and have the whole day in front of me. Also I haven’t showered yet :)

When I try to exercise mid day it seems like it breaks up the whole day. Either I have to wait to take a shower, or I’ve already showered and then have the unpleasant choice of being sweaty or taking time to take yet ANOTHER shower. . .

Leaving it until the evening is usually an even worse alternative. I know, we THINK that it would be easy to work out at night, after all the kids are in bed and everything is done. But by the end of the day it is soooo easy to just give up and put it off until tomorrow.

That’s what I wanted to do. I’m still bone tired from my trip (even with a long nap this afternoon). I had a migraine from hell last night that took 2 doses of my meds to get rid of, and it left me with a niggling headache today. Add to that “Auntie P” showed up today and I have cramps. I wanted to just say “the hell with it all”.

But I knew if I did I’d have to come on here and write some sort of lame post on why I didn’t exercise. Which is exactly why I am posting here! It forces me to have more accountability! So I did, and it’s thanks to you all.

Jenn-Workouts 6-8

Written by Jenn on June 9th, 2009

Just wanted to let you know that I really have done the 30 day challenge every day except Sunday (when I decided to give my body, and knees, a rest)

This morning at my mom’s while I’m doing the workout my son “buddy” was sitting on the sofa watching. Both of the kiddos for some reason like to sit and watch me do it-I figure it is good modeling for them. After all, that way they get to see that it is important to Mom to stay fit and to be healthy.

Anyway, the little “trainer” lady on the game is always giving you encouraging statments. (You can turn that off or reduce the frequency, I’ve left it at the factory setting) I was doing the inline skating and complaining (it makes your thighs BURN I tell ya), then next some squats came on. The lady said “Your body will thank you for this later”. Buddy-who is 5-chimes in from the sofa behind me “I don’t think your body is thanking you now”. . .

I almost fell out laughing. It’s really hard to do squats while you are also executing a belly laugh!

Heading home today-once I finish writing this I will change out of my sweaty clothes, pack the kiddos into the car and initiate the 4-5 hour drive home. For those of you wondering, I pretty much bombed on my intention to skip the sweets and eat slowly (although I did not eat anywhere near as much as I COULD have eaten). I did ok with the water but not fabulous, and I probably drank way too much coffee and diet coke.

So I may not have met all my goals, but I did only take that single day off from exercising. . . even when I had been up to 1 am talking with my sibilings, I still got up the next day and did it. So I count it a partial success.

On an admin note, we are still working on the comments for this site. We really do love to hear from you all. . . we’ll post a big obvious note when the comments are up and functional. Promise.

Yes, I actually got up this morning and did my workout! Even though I’m at my moms. Be proud of me.

Jenn-Workout 4

Written by Jenn on June 4th, 2009

Well I’m heading off to my Mom’s this afternoon with the family for my baby niece’s christening! After my workout this morning I packed up the Wii & the EA Sports Active for the trip-I will not only be doing my workouts, I’ll be showing the whole system to my mom & sisters.

There were actually a couple of surprises in this mornings 22 minute workout. I thought that by now having done 6 or 7 of the preset workouts (before I officially started the 30 day challenge workout series) I had seen all the exercises. But I had two new ones today-knee crunches and. . . . well, something else. I can’t even remember what it was called :) It’s been more than 5 minutes ago and my memory isn’t so hot some days.

I’m giving myself a couple of goals for this trip to my mom’s. Sure, I could say I’m going to totally watch what I eat and stay under 1200 calories a day-but let’s be honest. That isn’t going to happen. You’ve got 40 folks from my French/Italian/German family coming. We show love through food and there is going to be a lot of it-the whole time. So I’m going to keep my goals realistic. There are 3 of them:

#1-Drink my 8 glasses of water every day
#2-Skip all the sweets.
#3-Eat more slowly to give myself a chance to feel full.

So we’ll see how that goes.

Jenn-Workout 2&3

Written by Jenn on June 4th, 2009

So I’ve been in Madison Wisconsin at the Oscar Mayer Headquarters for a really cool event about luncheon meat.

Yeah, I know that it sounds dorky, but it was actually pretty interesting, I had a chance to be professionally filmed doing a sandwich recipe (which I will post a link to when it goes up) and was able to hang out with some truly fantastic women! (Part I and Part II)

Obviously I could not do the actual 30 day challenge workouts, but I did go to the gym BOTH MORNINGS!

Whoo-hoo! Go me!

Not only that, but yesterday morning I really pushed myself. I did the treadmill for 30 minutes, and alternated between running and a very slow jog in 4 minute intervals. After 2 of the 4 sets, I really, really wanted to click back the intensity of those running parts. But I said to myself “Self-you can do this! I know your legs are burning and you want to let up, but letting up is why you don’t lose weight. . . as long as it isn’t just pain, but is fatigue you WILL keep going.”. . . And I did! I was just so proud of me.

While I was doing my cool down I saw the guy behind me (the treadmill faced a mirror) using the free weights and I made an on the spot decision to use the lightest handweights they had (5lbs) and replicate some of the exercises that I had been doing with the exercise band.

I can’t tell you the last time I used any kind of free weights. Probably the last time I was still in the Army. But I just did exactly what I’d been doing on the EA Sports workouts-bicep curls, tricept kickbacks, bent over rows. . . Just 2 sets of 10 each-which will never make me into a body builder or anything, but for me that was taking the “gym” style workout up a notch.

Now this mornings workout wasn’t as intense by any means. Actually it was totally lame in comparison. I just did a steady 30 minute fast walk. Since what I really wanted to do was completely skip it, I figured that walking was better than nothing. I rationalized by telling myself that although my thighs didn’t hurt from the run the day before, I really didn’t want to be aching the whole time I was traveling home this afternoon.

Speaking of traveling, humping my pretty heaving roller suitcase and purse through 4 different airport terminals, two of which I had to book it as fast as I could walk without running in order to catch my flight, has GOT to count as an additional workout. Even if I did sort of offset it by eating cheese nips and a Tobblerone bar (which was a gift from the Oscar Mayer folks-Kraft and Oscar Mayer are merged-and Kraft makes Tobblerone! Who knew?)

Quick Admin Post

Written by LosingMama on June 3rd, 2009

Thanks for the heads up about the lack of functioning comments guys!

The template that I used as a base for this has a serious malfunction (in theory, it has popup comments - in reality, it’s miscoded… sigh) and I need to actually take a good solid look at the .php files to fix it… which isn’t happening tonight since it’s midnight and I’ve been working on this problem for an hour even tho I’m supposed to be asleep.

So I apologize in advance if you’ve tried and been frustrated. Will get it fixed tomorrow - even if I have to go beat it into submission. Seriously… who adds in a template & function that are never called? *grumble*

I hate CSS and PHP - lets people really mess up something that should be simple. Anyhoo… tomorrow. Thanks for your patience!

Jenn-Workout 1

Written by Jenn on June 1st, 2009

Ok, turns out my flight for Wisconsin doesn’t leave until just after 4pm. . .not 2pm like I somehow thought. whatever. Anyway there was plenty of time for me to do the first workout in the 30 day challenge.

I actually got the EA Sport unit about a week and a half ago, so I have done a bunch of the preset workouts to try it out. But there is an actual set program for the 30 day workout which I waited to begin until today.  It is buillt in a way that you gradually increase in difficulty and use different muscle groups every day. . . I’ll explain all of it to make more sense later.

Just wanted to say “see, I did it”.

The Starting Point

Written by Jenn on June 1st, 2009

5 years ago, when I left the Army, despite having had 2 children and having reached the ripe old age of 32 I was still in pretty good shape.

Sure, in my 11 years of service my weight had slowly crept up from the 132lbs to 140lbs, but it still sat decently on my 5′2″ frame.

Of course, I had NEEDED to stay in shape.  When you are a service member, you given a physical fitness test and have your height and weight taken at a minimum every 6 months.  Physical fitness was a daily requirement of my job until I reached the higher ranks-but even when I was not required to attend formal company sessions, I still had to make sure I kept my weight to certain standards or risk my job!

Then I left the service. . . became a stay at home mom. . . and began to gain weight. . .

And now, 5 years later I’m 15 lbs heavier.  Not only heavier, but FLABBIER! As we all know, muscles are more dense than fat, so those 15 lbs are taking up more space than you would expect.

I have always know what to do-it’s a matter of actually taking the time, putting myself first, and doing it.  I haven’t been doing any of that.

It was like providence when Kathryn from EA Sports Active contacted me about joining the 30 Day Challenge.  There it was–a sign!

This time I swear I’m going to stick with it. Unlike the exercise DVDs, the gym membership and my promise to myself that I’d get up early and run 3 days a week (yeah, right) I want to stick to this. Really stick to it.

So here I am , promising publicly, with PICTURES and everything, that I will take the 30 day challenge and stick with it.  On the 1st of July, you all will see a slimmer, more toned me! And to keep me honest, I’ve challenged* my good friend Lucretia as well.

Tune in to cheer us on and see how we do!

Coming soon-the starting measurements and starting workout.

*Note: Well ok, it was like a mutual challenge :)
